About Verse-sequoia
Dedicated researchers connecting scholars, producers, and enthusiasts with television heritage
Our Mission
Television shaped the twentieth century in profound ways, yet much of its history remains underexplored. We established Verse-sequoia to bridge gaps between scattered archives, isolated researchers, and untold stories waiting to be discovered.
Our team combines academic rigour with practical experience in broadcasting. Several members worked directly in production before transitioning to historical research, bringing insider perspectives to archival investigation. Others trained in media studies, library science, and documentary filmmaking.
This diversity enables us to serve varied clients effectively. We understand what documentary producers need differently from what academic researchers require. Museum curators have distinct priorities from educational institutions. Tailoring our approach to each context yields better outcomes than one-size-fits-all methodologies.
How We Operate
We function as a consultancy and research service, generating revenue through project-based engagements. Clients commission specific investigations, request expert consultation for productions, or enrol in our educational programmes. Each service carries transparent pricing allowing informed decisions.
Unlike commercial archives that sell footage, we specialise in research and analysis. We help clients locate materials across multiple archives, understand broadcasting contexts, and develop historically accurate narratives. When clients need actual footage, we facilitate connections with appropriate rights holders rather than licensing materials ourselves.
This model aligns our interests with client success. We have no inventory to sell, so our recommendations focus purely on what serves research objectives. Independence from any single archive allows us to survey the complete landscape of available materials without bias.
Our Journey
Foundation
Established as a specialist consultancy after recognising gaps in available television history research services. Initial focus on British broadcasting heritage from the 1950s through 1970s.
Archive Partnerships
Developed working relationships with major UK archives and collections, enabling efficient research across previously siloed holdings.
Educational Launch
Introduced structured educational programmes responding to university requests for guest expertise and specialised workshops.
Documentary Consultation
Expanded services to support documentary productions, providing historical consultation and archival research for television retrospectives.
International Scope
Extended research capabilities to include transatlantic broadcasting relationships and international programme exchanges.
Research Philosophy
We approach television history as cultural history. Programmes reflected and shaped societal attitudes, documented events as they unfolded, and introduced ideas to mass audiences. Understanding this context transforms simple programme research into meaningful cultural investigation.
Primary sources anchor our methodology. Scripts, production files, correspondence, ratings data, and contemporary reviews provide evidence that later retrospectives often overlook. We prioritise materials created during production over subsequent recollections, which memory inevitably colours.
Rigorous documentation ensures our findings remain valuable beyond immediate projects. Each investigation produces organised research files that clients can reference for future work. This differs from casual searching that leaves no systematic record.
